Take the red pill
Fake's take:
This job is a blend of artesan pride and the latest technology. Euro RSCG wanted a realistically crumbling heap of pills, so Fake started experimenting with drugs.
Artist Tuomas Korpi composed the feature mosaic on top of a reference photo, pill by pill by hand. Next the image was built into a 3D geometry by Erko Raaman, composited by Sami Syrjä, and rendered by Janne Mäkinen, and the end result was fed in the Thinking Particles geometry system.
The crumbling effect itself is partially physics-based, home-grown by Erko Raaman. The exact right shape and size for the action trigger took the most effort in this job. Ville Vaajakallio, Producer, goes on record: "Fake is known for our work with transformations, like crumbling, and now we're experimenting with simulation. The programmable physics and in-house technology tie nicely into our workflow."
