Cheer up, Snellman!
There is a fed up statesman you’re familiar with sitting in front of the Bank of Finland: his name is Johan Vilhelm Snellman. If you wonder what’s wrong with the guy, have a look at the print commissioned to Happi Mindshare / Taivas and Fake. This alternative version of the famous statue reflects Suomen Kuvalehti coverage on the financial crisis: an unpleasant topic in search of good articles.
Showing the guardian of the highest financial institution baffled and tired was a tough decision, even from the technical point of view. The challenge was to reach the emotional balance between impact and message: “Johan is a worried man, not one without hope left” says Tommi Rapeli, Creative Director at Fake. All the 3D, background collage and retouching are therefore intentionally invisible, for the picture to feel part of a real photo reportage.
